Bonus Tips:-

Keep your keyword in the start of title and meta description so that it is not skipped by crawler. By doing this you are increasing the visibility of your blog.

Because it has been observed that search engines give high weightage for keywords that are present in URL. Wordpress provides various option to define structure based on year & month however you have vast choice for selection of permalink. Some prefer to include category name, year to be included.

While I prefer simple yet search engine friendly permalink structure which you might have observed.

SEO Best Practices

Follow these tips while deciding permalink structure for your blog.

• Select static URL structure instead of dyamic URL,
• Use minimum number of words in URL
• Try to use keywords in start of URL
• Try to limit the number of directories for SEO purpose. Because you are pushing your keywords in the end.
• Don’t change permalink structure. If change is unavoidable use plugin to safely change permalinks.
• In my opinion, don’t use categories in structure, it will allow to rearranging/renaming categories in future.
• Use dashes instead of underscores.
• Use Clean SEO Slug plugin. It will remove unnecessary words from URL to make it short and SEO friendly.

If you want to customize the structure, all you need to click permalink in wordpress control panel and select custom structure. Here you can define valid tags in custom field.

Carefully select permalink structure for your blog, because changing it later will cause broken links which is not liked by Google.

But what if you hire some reputable SEO company and after some time you simply get to know that they were not executing the SEO in right direction? Some of them were using Black Hat SEO which are not long lasting and may result in banning and kicking out of search engine results.

Buying Links:-

Second confession is about buying links. Rand purchased links for his clients to excel SERP but we know, this is just waste of money and Google totally dislikes it. Anchor text plays vital role in link building and paid links haven’t this quality. Along with this disadvantage, relevancy and link worth plays important role. Irrelevant links are totally useless and Google understands that such link has been purchased due to difference in niche/topic of web site.

H1 Formatting of Keywords:-

Third mistake actually busted a myth. Before that mistake they strongly believe that keywords should be formatted with H1 so that bots can easily detect them due to emphasis and give it more weightage.

Just think about if you have a blog with 500 articles, how would you feel about editing every post and formatting keyword with H1 formatting. But thanks to Rands’ adventurous nature, he found that his H1 practice having same weightage as formatting keywords with normal text. Though, most of us still use bold formatting for keyword to make it more visible to search engines. H1 formatting is beneficial in titles and this fact is also endorsed by W3C in their article.

XML Site Maps Myth Busted:-

Practice proved that sitemaps based on XML increased indexation rate. Before this myth was busted accidentally, SEOmoz Company strongly believed in non XML based sitemaps which ultimately resulted in reduced indexation rate.

301 Redirect:-

Redirection is a tricky game. Wrong redirection will cost you in losing the traffic due to various issues like redirection of backlinks etc. I myself permanently redirected my previous domain traffic to this one and was successful and kept that site in redirection state for next Google PR update. Link by link direction will save you if you have small site.

Now put yourself in the shoes of person who is good but living in nitrous area or they have bad neighbors. In both situations he will be penalized. But why we are discussing good neighbors and bad neighbors in a blog post?  Because, a blog is also a neighborhood of sorts. Both good and bad blogs exsist.

Blogs have generally two types of bad neighborhoods. One in which he is living and second one to which he has linked his blog site too.

Living in Bad Neighborhoods:-

Most of the blogs who are in their initial or intermediary phase use shared hosting services for hosting. Such servers share the same IP for all sites hosted on it. Now if one of these other sites is performing a suspicious SEO technique that site will get banned and there is a good chance that your site will also get banned due to same shared IP address. Do a little investment and purchase a dedicated IP for your website. A dedicated IP would not only give you peace of mind but it also speeds up your site as a shared IP bears more load. This is another reason why web hosting service providers offer dedicated IP address as a separate product. Check how many and which sites are hosted on Same IP as yours.

Linking to Bad Neighborhoods:-

This is very common type of bad neighborhood. Google bans web sites due to black hat SEO practices like copyright infringement, link farming, hidden links, deceptive titles etc. All of these techniques are known as black hat SEO used to illegitimately optimize page rank. Such sites, when caught, are banned by Google forever.

How to Avoid:-

After discussing the bad neighborhood concept, one thing is clear and that is don’t link to such sites. But how do you know which sites are marked as bad neighborhoods or banned by Google. It’s very simple. Just type site:abc.com in Google search bar and see the results. If Google is not showing the results, it’s most likely that Google has banned that site. Google has removed all indexed and cached files of the site to penalize him.

Before linking to a site, just check the site by adopting the above described method. Links to all sites which are banned or blocked will cost you reduced Page Rank because Google consider you as the part of same bad neighborhood.

Here I have a solution, why not to steal some clues from blogging gurus. What would you say, isn’t that a good idea? I am totally against of such type of practices like stealing etc. Actually we are going to do some in-depth analysis but I am naming it stealing because we are doing all this without permission of owner of blog. So let’s steal some ideas and clues to find out answers to our questions.

First of all we need to list at least four or five blogging Gurus for our project IGI (I am Going In – My favorite Pc game by codemaster ).

After making a list of four to five Big Boys, this is not Big Boy of Bollywood alledged Star Amitabh Bachan; but is A Big Blogger, we are going to analyze the SEO strategy of these Big Boys.

Friends, sitemap submissions to search engines play a vital role. In my opinion, almost 70% of future site ranking depends on it. A good sitemap with a proper configuration is vital. If your site map is not properly configured, then all your hard work is in vain, let me say that again.  If your sitemap is not properly configured, then your hard work is in vain!

Basic Sitemap Setting:-

The WordPress plugin for Google sitemap has many options in which there are some basic settings. Set these settings as per your liking, for instance, notify Bing, Google, Ask etc. Building mode has two options and I recommend marking a check in both check boxes to decrease our time wasting our efforts. Then come to post priority setting. Better to select don’t use automatic priority calculation. Manual prioritizing is good option. We have values ranging from 0.0 to 1.0 where 1.0 is the highest value.

Now Stealing the Setting from Big Boys:-

Here we have analyzed and observed the Big Boys blog for the setting of:

• Tags,
• Categories,
• Achieves,
• Author pages,
• Their change frequency,
• And Priority for indexing.

Let’s start our mission. We will analyze the sitemap setting of big blogs from their sitemap.xml. For this purpose open the internet explorer, type the site name followed by “/sitemap.xml”. It means that complete address would seem this;

www.yourbigblogger.com/sitemap.xml

and you have output stating all hidden and compulsory settings from which we found answers of some important questions.

• Shall I include tags in sitemap?
• Shall I include category in sitemap?
• Shall I include achieve in sitemap?
• What should be change frequency?
• How much prioritizing number should be allocated?

After analyzing the Big Boys sites, we found that, they have included tags and categories in their sitemap, resulting in increased number of indexed file in search engine and increased internal site links, a definite SEO Boost.

Archive was not included by most of Big Boys while others did. It might be they have some solution to avoid duplicate content. My recommendation is not to include archive in your sitemap to avoid duplicate content. Analysis also gave us an inside of priority ranking of their site contents.

So our recommended setting for sitemap, after analyzing the Big Boys is;

• Include Tag and Category in site map with 70% (0.7) daily change priority.
• Don’t include archive in sitemap. Give it 0.0 priorities.
• Don’t include authors’ page in sitemap.
• Posts and static page should be given same priority with daily basis.
• Allocate 100% (1.0) priority and daily or hourly change frequency to your home page.

We do publish post and place them in proper categories. We make general categories like Blogging, electronics, Entertainment. All of these cover wide area of domain.

A better option for naming the categories is to narrow the category name like we can use Blogging Tips, Mobile phone and movies for all above stated general categories depending on subject of our article.

Let’s make it more clear with help of some example. Suppose you have a category “Operating System” and you put all Linux, UNIX, Windows, related posts in the said category. But it will be more beneficial with respect of SEO if, your article is on windows tricks and tips and you create a category under operating system with title of “Windows Tips and Tricks”.

Now when a user enter the keywords in search engine for windows XP tricks, you have more and better chances to be on first page of search engine as compared to general category list which are not comprehensive in meaning.

After you have decided to include the category name in your topics URL and you are using permalink structure other than %category%/%posts%, you need to change the permalink structure to include the category name in your posts’ URL.

Search engine index all pages of our websites and share page rank with pages like login page, admin pages and achieve pages. On every new post, we attract traffic to our site where visitors leave comments and many other websites link to us. Spammers also play their game and spam on the blog. Too many links on page will surely share page rank juice with them.

To control all these problems after introduction of page rank, Google introduced a new technique named “nofollow”. Nofollow tag on a link stops search engine crawler to visit that particular link and don’t share page rank juice with them. Now nofollow and dofollow becomes crucial tool for marketing and is widely and wisely used.

However, nofollow is not much important as we consider it. When we have comment on a post, that post will remain on main page for a short time and become part of achieve, which has less value as compared to main page.

Commentators who comment on our website, deserves the share from your page rank. That share is very small and will not make huge difference, provided that you have not many comments and links on that page. Commentators pay frequent visits and happily leave comments on the blogs who share page rank juice.

On the other side, if you have a lot of comments and outbound links, you will definitely lose a major part of page rank. So wise use of “nofollow” tag will give you maximum control over page rank.

Following factors are very important while deciding for nofollow tag,

• Average number of comments you receive on your single post
• Average number of trackbacks you receive on single post,
• Total Number of outward links from your main page,
• Advertising on main page,
• Links on sidebar,
• Your Blogroll,
• Your friend list on main page (if you have),
• Subscription through RSS, e-mail, twitter links,
• Number of pages on your site.

I am again saying that wise use of “nofollow” will benefit you. For example if we add nofollow to login page, admin pages, search result page, sitemap page etc. It will result in giving maximum page rank to your main page. Again same strategy might be opted for the entire above said list.
