As we have already talked about domain migration in our previous site, by the grace of God, this process has been completed flawlessly. All our data has been migrated without creating any error. This post is dedicated to cover the complete domain migration process.
Domain and Host Migration:-
Selection of domain name was the most crucial area. Keyword rich domain was our focus. After continuous struggle of searching, we were able to find our desired domain name. Keyword rich domain name has its own importance as it will automatically attract organic traffic from search engine.
We selected the host who was also offering domain name registration along with hosting service. UNIX based server and apache are the most stable and reliable servers in the world. We followed the industry standard and selected UNIX plus apache based web server.

Site Backup:-
After registration of domain name, we took the backup of our previous blog by taking backup of all posts and exported the XML file. Using CPanel, we accessed our website and through file manager we compressed our images data folder and downloaded for migration.

Installing and customizing WordPress:-
I personally prefer the customized installation of WordPress due to reason that I can take all security measures. I choose hard to guess database name and created a user, allowing him all database privileges. After installation I took other security measures, like I changed default user name etc.

Plugins Installation:-
Do remember one thing, try to use minimal number of Plugins because they alter database and executes extra SQL queries, which results in delayed site load time. We installed selected set of must have plugins for wordpress.
Read our post on 12 Essential Plugins for WordPress.
Theme and Skin Installation:-
Blogging needs initial investment, after that you pay nothing. Thesis theme is a good investment in SEO optimized theme for wordpress. I installed the theme along with custom made skin, by myself, for my blog. Now each and every thing was ready for migration.

Restoration Process:-
Migration process was started by restoring the backup file and uploaded compressed images folder to relevant folders and started observing the behavior of restoration process. I checked all the articles and found following behavior of restored backup file;
- Images were broken,
- Links were broken.
- Folder name and structured was changed due to new structure and different folder names in new blog.
After playing around with SQL queries all gone perfectly. Images started to appear and all links and folders names were corrected.
Google Webmaster Tools & Traffic Redirection:-
After testing all the posts, pages, links and other stuff in new site, this was the time to redirect the traffic from earlier site.
Read our post on Custom Maintenance Mode Page via Redirection Plug-in.
We applied for change in address request in Google Web Master Tools and after that we used permanent redirection to redirect all traffic from earlier site. After that we again checked effect of redirection by entering the keywords in Google search and got successful 301 redirection.
This was the journey of complete domain migration. We have shared our experience with our readers. Your comments and suggestions will keep us motivated.

This is the most painful task, migrating a domain and more complicate when you need to switch the platform as well. I am undergone a recent migration of this sort. My blog was hosted on blogger.com platform and comments on IntenseDebate, now, when I realized that WordPress is a must for serious blogging, I shifted to self hosted WordPress blog. My blogging platform as well as the hosting both are changed resulting heavy loss of back links and all of the comments.

Suresh, migration of domain cause in loss of backlinks. Though you can inform them to update their links, but its result is not satisfactory. For comments migration, install intense database for wordpress, synchronise them and you have your comments on wordpress.
