What are Your Productive Working Hours?

by Bobby Jay

Working hours play important role in our productivity. If our working time don’t cover productive hours, that whole time is useless as compared to that period which is very productive. In my opinion that particular time is more preferable as compared to non-productive hours. Our regular jobs have predefined working hours while we set our own working time in self-employed jobs. We work almost 8-10 hours a day.

You might have noticed that there is a specific time in which we are very productive and give maximum output. That specific time is very important and yields best result. That time may be in early morning or in late night. Actually it depends on your nature of job and your concentration level.

If you work efficiently in morning time it means that you are morning person and very productive in that span of time. You have penalty of time to utilize in other productive tasks. You have chance to go for entertainment in evening or enjoy gathering with your friends in some restaurant.

You can attend social gathering and meetings in evening and in night you still have enough time to watch a movie. You can easily and conveniently attend your clients. Work for 9-5 and enjoy your natural and balanced life pattern.

But what if you feel you can work better in night or in late night. There are people who can’t work in distraction and are very productive when they are alone and have pin drop silence. Some are mid night owl and produce amazing results in their preferred working hours. Such people have their creativity at peak, like graphic designers, web site designers or writers.

Working in late night has its own disadvantages. You get up late next day and have different timing schedule as compared to others. You wake up by 12’O clock and then start your normal day. What about breakfast, when other people are preparing their lunch. Whole setup is disturbed and have may lead to some health issues.

Professionals may have problem due to this type of, what I call, disturbed schedule. They have clients which need their assistance or may be a potential client is eager to contact you but you just have started your day now and preparing for other routine tasks.

I know one of my friend who performs his creative work only in silent and quiet environment. He used to work in late hours due to fact that he feels himself more creative in that time, he has no client calls, no gathering with friends and totally free of routine day work. He need full concentration and work with great tempo.

All my life I was a late nighter. I always felt more productive in the evening/late night hours. Now the early mornings is the best time of the day to get things accomplished. Great post :)

Hi Imran,
I sit here trying to define my work schedule and I can’t really do it. I know this I wish I were in a totally different place. Until then, I really go until I cannot go any longer. I just think it is best to keep moving. So I’m up at 4:30 AM down at 2.00 P.M for rest. Up at 7:30 P.M. Down at 12.00A.M. Up at 2.30Am down at 10:30 A.M. Then 8 hours sleep. As you can see its really bad. I’ll deal with it!

If I can totally control my environment, I like to get going about 10:30 A.M. and wrap-up around 12:00 A.M.

You sound like me with lots of extra energy than most (I actually have a medical condition that causes me to feel this way, but not every day). I would do well with days longer than 24 hours. I’m usually up at 6 at the latest, but sometimes even later, maybe 9. I usually get up in time to spend a while with my honey before he goes to bed.

I’m an early morning worker! Seems like my best ideas are during a cup of coffee in the first hour of work.

You would be enjoying your natural life style along with social gathering. You have developed a very nice habit of creative thinking in morning with cup of coffee. In morning when your brain is fresh and on peak of maximum productivity.

My most productive hours are in the morning (between 8 and noon). After lunch, I find myself getting less and less productive. :)

Kevin, have you tried working in night? May be this time is more fruitful for you.

I am bit of a slugabed if I get up in the morning all I do is drink coffee and smoke, At night my ideas become more alive and I think this is the best time to work in my opinion.I have also worked at night where its was easy to put in 14 hours a day when I work days I want to work 5 hours.

Roezer, I also noticed that in night timings, i squeeze more work as compared to rest of the day. No one disturb me and i have full concentration. So it means that few hours of productive time are worth while as in this time we also produce quality work.

Haha, yeah, like my mom won’t call me with a problem and want to go on and on for an hour, like she only sometimes does, so I’m fairly okay with it. :-)

… However if I’m reverse cycling and she can’t reach me with a major problem (like she needs my emotional support) then she’ll really whine later! Haha.

I start off really strong in the morning but from lunch on I wane to the point of uselessness by 5. I know to do the big important projects in the morning and safe the little easy things for those afternoon hours.

Tracy that’s a good strategy. Attend important & big projects in morning, when you are more productive and finishing your less important or as you said easy tasks afternoon. A complete balance in both types of work. Some people do it in reverse order. They do less important or less creative work in their productive time and put double efforts on important tasks in time when their energy is low.

I usually wake up early in the morning write 1-2 posts and publish one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

Writing articles in the morning is gr8, it helps you to get fresh and new ideas.
Do try it once !! :)

I work very efficiently in early morning and at night. In the morning, I always feel refreshing and perspicacious in my mind, nothing to worry about whereas at night I have a great working environment, nothing annoys and it is very quiet.

So it means that you are full time blogger and had tried working in different timings to check maximum productivity. Thats good. One of my reader is very intelligent, he is very good in morning time and perform most of his creativity work while in night, he brain storm and writes for his blog. Are you also trying same some sort of strategy for maximum output with quality?

Hey Imran,

My most productive hours are in the early morning, which is why I set my alarm for 4:30 AM. Note that I said set my alarm, not wake up. :) It doesn’t always happen, but it’s certainly most productive.

In the middle of the night – around midnight, if I am still awake, I will have another 1 to 2 hours of really productive time, and this is when I usually do my writing for bizchickblogs or other blogs. But it obviously hinders waking up early, so it tends to be a trade-off. I don’t write as well in the middle of the day as I do late at night.

Cheers,
Tia

Nice to see you here Tia. So you are productive in both timings morning+night. It seems that you productive+creative time in night time as you have described that you do writing job in night. Well that may be due to less distortion and quiet environment. Btw, you should take care of your health because you can easily disturb your sleeping timings which may cost you in reduction of creativity. I feel laziness all over the day :)

Good question! I work best super late at night, most often. I usually get the most done and feel most driven and enthusiastic about my work when I start after my honey goes to sleep and work even through the whole morning or more. Sometimes I notice I’m on a roll in a different schedule, too, because I have memories of continuing to work, joyfully, after my honey gets home in the evening, haha. (It seems when I’m on a web design “path” I overwork but when I’m writing, night time is the right time! [Unless my mind is tired but I'd probably need sleep then.]) Obviously these different schedules are on different days!

He supports my cycle, which is great. Sometimes reverse cycling even works really well with my personal life, just not on the weekends! I find I might need an extra day off to recover or adjust, but overall I’ve put in MORE time.
